Diapers...

So far, I've stocked up on disposables as I have seen excellent sales - my most recent purchase was Huggies for less than $4 a pack. Not only am I happy to get these good deals now, and spread out my spending on baby items, I think it will be great to have a supply in the house - no need to run out and buy them.

We are generally into environmentally friendly choices and seriously considered cloth, but my primary support people (MIL and SIL) and REALLY not into doing cloth. I know I will want the help, so I figured I might as well go with the convenience and just do disposable. Also, from some of what I have read, it is unclear whether cloth, which require a lot of resources in washing, are actually better for the environment than disposables.

But I was reminded the other day of what I had originally wanted to use - gDiapers. These seemed like the perfect balance between the convenience of disposable (the icky part breaks up and flushes) and cloth (reusable outside part). Someone I know is using them and just loves them. So I am tempted to give them a try.

As I mentioned this to my husband yesterday, I remembered the other reason we had opted to go with disposable - we only have a bathroom on the second floor. I plan to have a diaper changing station (part of the pack and play) downstairs in my living room, to make life easier. I'm not sure planning to have to go upstairs for every diaper change is a good plan - especially given my increased C-section odds.

Right now, I'm going to keep looking for good disposable deals - I'm sure we'll use them when we're out, and perhaps overnight, even if we do try the gDiapers for regular use. Any thoughts from the more experienced moms on this? I know this is an issue people have strong feelings about - don't worry, you can't offend me on this!

I love my Fuzzi Bunz (which I purchased used on Craigslist)! I didn't find any increased cost in doing more laundry with the diapers.

That said, right now I'm mostly using disposables because 1)I'm getting good prices and 2) I am too tired to do the laundry required with cloth diapers. I generally use cloth while at home and disposables when out and about and at night.

I would say when your baby is getting close to 5-6 mos, reevaluate. You'll be on your feet, hopefully getting more sleep, and may be up to the cloth diaper routine. I had a c-section and it is difficult to do laundry at first. Also, many times newborns are just too small to fit the cloth (at least the pocket diapers I use). I always suggest to new moms interested in cloth to wait until baby hits a size 3 diaper and then decide if you want to switch to cloth.

Great thoughts Camille, I hadn't heard that idea of waiting until the baby is bigger before. Definitely will keep that in mind!

I have heard all the arguments for and against and frankly I still dont' get the pull for cloth. *shrug* We use disposable, have always, and as far as I can tell will always. There is enough laundry to deal with with the kids as it is. I can think of a trillion thing I would rather do with my time. But that is just me. As I said I just don't get it.

I used cloth at home and disposables will out and about with my first child, but when the second came along, I grew quickly overwhelmed by the laundry and I have never gone back to cloth. I consider it some times, but I'm pretty sure I would hate it.

Another thing you cannot know until your child get here, is if yours will poop a lot or not. My closest friend who uses cloth has a child who poops once a day. My two year old poops 5-8 times a day (much a like a newborn). I would have to have a lot more diapers and do a lot more laundry to keep up with my son than my friend does for hers.
